Free parking options in Riomaggiore

  1. Thank you for the wonderful insight you provide on the Cinque Terre. It has been most helpful. We plan to visit the CT on Saturday, May 13. We will drive over to La Spezia from Lucca, park at the La Spezia Stazione Centrale, and take the Explora5Terre bus from there. I have made reservations for the bus. There will be four of us. My wife and I visited the CT in 2002, this will be the first time for our friends. The Explora bus seems like a great option. Thanks again, Joe K.

    1. My pleasure, Joe! I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time.

If you haven’t already booked the parking beneath the La Spezia Centrale train station, you might actually want to drive *almost* to Riomaggiore. There’s free parking alongside the Litoranea just before the turnoff for Riomaggiore (and there’s an Explora bus stop there as well). Just an idea… 😉

      Take care,

  2. In winter it’s ok. DO NOT TRY in summer. Even in April you wouldn’t find a free space. Leave your car in La Spezia.

    1. Ciao Euge!

I also recommend parking the car in La Spezia and taking the train (or Explora bus) to the Cinque Terre. However, I received numerous requests about the free parking situation in Riomaggiore which prompted this post.

You mention summer versus winter but actually if you plan to arrive early in the morning or later in the evening even in peak-season, you will have a pretty good chance of finding a free parking space. Of course, if you arrive prime time you’ll need lots of luck. 😉

  3. Amy, just returned from that region. Was there June 1-3, parking is exactly as you described. Got there early enough before noon and found a free spot where you suggested pulling mirrors in. Yep it is a walk but was able to find rides down and back . Loved it, your information is so useful CIAO John

  4. I’m planning on visiting at the end of March and hoping to find a free parking spot. This blog was very helpful, thank you! One question…if I am lucky enough to secure a free parking spot do I need to walk along the road to get to the town or is there a path/trail off the road that will get me there?

    1. Ciao Joanna!

Thanks for reading! If you park towards the top (where the turnoff for Riomaggiore from the Litoranea is located) you can hike down a trail that connects to the village’s cemetery. It’s quite steep and all stairs so I don’t recommend it if you’re carrying luggage. If you park anywhere else your best bet will be to walk alongside the road (use caution). 🙂
